Defensible Space Clearing in the East Bay Hills
Defensible space clearing removes and thins trees, brush, and dead vegetation around a home so a wildfire has less fuel to reach it. Golden State Tree Care clears defensible space in the East Bay hills, including the Fremont hills, Hayward hills, Castro Valley, Pleasanton, and Sunol, following California zone guidelines. A representative quotes each property.
Call (510) 876-4114What does defensible space clearing include?
The work focuses on fuel near the house first and then works outward. A typical clearing includes:
- Removing dead trees, dead branches, and dead leaves and needles.
- Cutting branches back from roofs and away from chimneys.
- Limbing up trees so low branches cannot carry fire into the canopy.
- Thinning trees and shrubs to create space between plants.
- Clearing dry brush, weeds, and grass to a low height.
- Chipping and hauling the cut vegetation off the property.
What are California's defensible space zones?
California law, Public Resources Code 4291, requires defensible space up to 100 feet from structures in State Responsibility Areas and many local high fire hazard areas. CAL FIRE divides that space into zones:
- Zone 0, the ember-resistant zone, 0 to 5 feet from the house: no flammable plants or mulch, no branches over the roof, and clean gutters. State regulations for Zone 0 are being finalized; check current rules.
- Zone 1, the lean, clean and green zone, 5 to 30 feet: remove dead plants, keep branches at least 10 feet from chimneys, and space trees and shrubs apart.
- Zone 2, the reduced fuel zone, 30 to 100 feet: cut grass low, remove fallen branches, and leave horizontal and vertical space between trees and shrubs.
- [Local East Bay fire district requirements and inspection deadlines pending confirmation, including Alameda County Fire, Fremont Fire, and Hayward Fire.]
What happens from the first call to final cleanup?
- Call and share your address. Tell us if you received an inspection notice and its deadline.
- Walk the property at the free estimate. We mark trees and brush by zone, starting closest to the house.
- Agree on the clearing plan. The estimate lists what gets removed, thinned, or limbed up, and checks permits for protected trees.
- Clear and thin. Our tree care crew works from the house outward, removing ladder fuels and dead material.
- Chip, haul, and review. We remove the material and walk the zones with you so you can keep them maintained.
Do you need a permit to remove trees for defensible space?
Fire safety does not automatically exempt a protected tree from city rules. Native oaks in the hills are often protected. Brush clearing and limbing usually need no permit.
[Permit exemptions for fire-safety work pending confirmation for Fremont, Hayward, and unincorporated Alameda County.]
We provide tree permit assistance. Read our tree permit guide for Fremont, Hayward and nearby cities and bring any existing city notices to your estimate.

What else should you know about defensible space?
How far from my house does defensible space go?
Up to 100 feet from structures, or to the property line if it is closer, under California law in covered areas.
What is Zone 0?
The first 5 feet around the home. The goal is nothing that embers can ignite, like bark mulch, dry plants, or branches over the roof.
Do I have to remove all my trees?
No. Defensible space is about spacing and removing dead fuel, not bare ground. Healthy, well-spaced trees can stay.
How high should tree branches be limbed?
CAL FIRE guidance ties it to the height of shrubs below. Generally, keep branches several feet above shrubs and off the ground.
I got a fire inspection notice. Can you help?
Yes. Send us the notice and deadline. We will plan the work to match what the inspector listed.
When is the best time to clear?
Late winter and spring, before grass dries and fire season starts. Then keep it maintained through summer.
Who gives me the price?
A Golden State Tree Care representative quotes after walking the property, since slope and volume vary widely.
